Basic Pieces of Baby Furniture

For first time parents, the project of buying baby furniture is usually rather challenging. But it is one of those pursuits that husbands and wives can enjoy doing when they’re expecting. But while there is a long furniture list that’s intended for babies, you need to first think about which ones are required and which ones can wait. With regards to necessary furniture pieces, remember that your baby will need something to sleep on, a corner to dress and change diapers on, a storage area for baby clothes and hampers for used clothes, light to keep him or her company and something comfy for his or her care-giver to sit on.

The moment your infant arrives, he or she requires something to sleep on. This means that a baby crib should top your shopping list. You will find several choices for cribs, from luxurious and pricey models to the basic and cheaper versions. Whether or not you pick the fantasy themed or classic wooden crib, make sure that its maker employs the regulating standards on baby cribs. For simply checking, make sure that the slats of the crib are no wider than a can of soft drink. Never be shy to make your own measurements. Get it done by all means. Your child’s safety will depend on you.

Next, you need something which you can use when changing or dressing up your child. A baby changing table ought to have a number of utilities. It will need to have storage for bottles, infant grooming items like powders and baby wipes, and lots of diapers.

You need something where you can store your child’s outfits. A hamper is good for storing baby clothing. Not only are they practical, they’re also accessible for speedy baby clothing changes.

Light is also important for babies. A nightstand can do in keeping both you and your child relaxed during the night. Also, you may find something to put on your nightstand, like a special table where you also place your baby’s feeding bottles and supplies.

Of course, your infant should not be the only person to feel comfy in the nursery. Put in an old-fashioned rocking chair that you can use while putting your child to sleep, while reading to your baby, or while just watching over him or her night or day.

With these considerations in mind, you can now finish your baby furniture dressers & cribs shopping list and start raiding consignment shops as well as browsing some online shop catalogs for some nice pieces to finish your nursery.

Furnishing Your Nursery with Cribs, Changing Tables, and Baby Furniture Dressers

There really is a huge array of baby furniture available, all begging for you to purchase it!  And you want the best for your baby.  So where do you start?  Cribs?  Baby furniture dressers?  Changing tables?  Cradles?

Set Some Goals

You’ll want your baby (and you!) to enjoy the nursery furniture from the time your babies are born until the last one is ready for bid-kid furniture, so durability and quality of construction are top concerns.  So when you are looking at baby furniture, check carefully to see how well it is made and how solidly it will be when put together.  Clearly, if it’s made of solid oak it will be much stronger and last a lot longer than if made mostly from plastic or composite materials.

You also want your furniture to be fun, safe, and playful while at the same time making the tasks that happen in a nursery easy and convenient to perform.

I recommend you start small – get some type of storage, a crib, and a changing table.  You can always build from there.

Baby Furniture Dressers

This is really an essential piece of furniture and will be important for storing baby’s clothes and diapers.  Without some kind of storage, you’re really asking for a very cluttered nursery, and you’ll never enjoy that.  You want to create a sense of organization while at the same time having all the things you and your baby need to make him or her happy.  Choose from the available baby furniture dressers carefully.

Crib

Obviously, this is another essential – even more essential than baby furniture dressers.  In choosing a crib, keep all the safety features in mind.  Your baby will spend a lot of time there.  Look for a crib that is safe and fun.

Changing Tables

Some parents avoid these, but I’ve found them to be a delight.  All the supplies are in the right places.  You have a clean place to change your baby – something that can be messy at times.  You don’t have diapering supplies all over your house.  And there is something about just plopping the kid down on the sofa or floor to change a diaper that just doesn’t seem like such a good idea to me for several reasons.  And if you are looking at the right baby furniture dressers, you might find one that is actually a changing table dresser!

What else might you buy?  Well, that’s the subject of another blog post!

Beyond Cribs, Changing Tables, and Baby Furniture Dressers

So you’ve got the basics of your nursery together.  You’ve got the right flooring.  The walls are painted and decorated.  You’ve bought a crib and a changing table.  You’ve shopped the stores and looked at all sorts of baby furniture dressers before picking out the dresser that will be perfect.  Now what else might you want for the nursery?

Baby monitor.  These little wireless things are so handy.  You can tell instantly if your baby has awakened from a nap and is crying no matter where you are in your house.  Get one.

Baby gliders and baby rocking chairs.  There is just something about having a really comfortable rocking chair in the nursery that sooths both baby and mommy.  Look for one that is sturdily build and that is very comfortable.  You might find yourself spending a lot of time with your baby there.

Lighting.  Soft, easy lighting for those late nights with your baby will be a blessing to both of you.  Of course, the number one priority here is safety.  That includes both the lamp itself and where you choose to locate it.

Music.  Make some kind of provision for playing some music in the nursery.  You might find it fun to experiment to see what sorts of sounds or music is most soothing to your baby.

Toys.  This is pretty simple.  You’ll want some age-appropriate toys handy for your baby to play with including during diaper changes.

Diaper pail.  You’ll need a safe, hygienic place to dispose of diapers.  Again, the safety of your child is the number one priority, especially when he or she is old enough to move around and explore.

None of these items have to be boring or plain.  The choices you have are myriad.  Shop around to stretch your dollars, but never scrimp on safety or comfort.  Get some good furniture and it will last you well beyond your first child.  Start with your crib, your changing table, and your baby furniture dresser.  Then build your nursery with the items we’ve chatted about here.  And best wishes for much joy with your baby!
